Blues” encore that evening, the still feisty Garcia again tossed in some full-arm strumming and even bounced around a bit for emphasis, punctuating one of those nights that saw the legendary band fully locked-in and having as much fun as the crowd there to see them.įull show video is available below thanks to the ever fantastic Voodoonola2. Some of the highlights from the show include one of the best versions of Sugaree you’ll ever hear and an outstanding Get Out of My Life Woman. Seemingly energized, Garcia (and Weir) threw some Pete Townshend-esque windmill guitar riffs into the climatic ending of a fiery “Truckin’” that came out of “Drums.”ĭuring the “U.S. The line-up for the show is Jerry Garcia on guitar and vocals, John Kahn on bass, Melvin Seals on keys, David Kemper on drums, Jaclyn LaBranch on vocals and Gloria Jones on vocals. During the extended drums segment, Garcia was among several others who emerged to sit-in during the rhythmic jam portion of the set. The second set got off to a start with “Bertha” and “Good Lovin’” before a drawn out “It Must Have Been The Roses.” A lengthy on-stage discussion delayed the start of “Estimated Prophet” with more banter from the members of the Dead. The original footage that Hazard remastered was missing the first part of the show. Garcia was joined on guitar 38 years ago today by Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh, drummers Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, keyboardist Keith Godchaux and vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux and the show began with the frequent opener “Jack Straw.” The opening set also included a gorgeous take on “Peggy-O,” some “Funiculi Funicula” tuning ahead of a nicely played “Row Jimmy” and Weir leading the closing “Lazy Lightning” -> “Supplication.” Weir and Lesh also made pleas for the venue to turn down the house lights during the banter-filled first set. This time we tune in to Jerry Garcia Band’s early show in Asbury Park, NJ on July 9th, 1977. The show at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Apfeatured a number of stand-out moments, and at times a particularly (and abnormally) animated Jerry Garcia. The evening culminates in a remarkable encore of "Rhapsody In Red," with both Muldaur and Godchaux belting it out and Garcia shredding up a storm near the end.Students attending Duke University in Durham, North Carolina were treated to a Grateful Dead concert on their campus on this date in 1978. In addition to introducing fresh new material from the "Cats" album to the band's live repertoire, this performance also includes a diverse range of covers, including Irving Berlin's "Russian Lullabye," Hank Ballard's "Tore Up Over You" and The Band's "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." Plenty of the laid back grooves that often defined Garcia's style with his own band are found here, but this performance also features many moments of ferocity, with Garcia in highly focused and inspired form. This particular JGB lineup included both Donna Jean Godchaux and Maria Muldaur on support vocals, who get a nice showcase of their own on the rarely performed gospel number "I'll Be With Thee." This recording is also remarkable for John Kahn being so prominent in the mix, which gives listeners a fine opportunity to hear the telepathic musical relationship he and Garcia enjoyed for so many years. The early show from this evening was simulcast live on WNEW in New York City and has long been a staple of Garcia collections, but relatively few have ever heard this second show from later that same night. The iconic lineup features John Kahn, Melvin Seals, David Kemper, Gloria Jones, and Jacklyn LaBranch.
